When I started crocheting, I had this obsession about mug cozy, I absolutely wanted one. When I couldn’t find a pattern that suited my taste (you know, cat and kawaii stuff), I decided I was going to try to make one myself. At that time, I knew some crochet techniques already, and understood the concept of increasing to make a rounded shape. That’s all I needed to make one of my first design: the cat mug cozy. So follow me as I teach you how to crochet a mug cozy cat in this article.

How to crochet a mug cozy cat
Ch 46, then to make a circle: sl st in the 1st loop of the chain. Note that the chain must go around your mug perfectly.

Round 1: ch 1, and starting the first free stitch, make 45 hdc. (go through the loops behind the stitches for a better result) At the end: sl st in the 1st stitch of the round. (45)
From now on, we will work in rows in order to leave off a space unworked for the mug’s handle.
Row 2: 2 sl st, ch 1, 42 hdc (42) The space left will be for our mug’s handle to fit in.
Row 3 to 10: ch 2, then turn, 42 hdc. (42)
R11: ch 2, then turn, 26 hdc, 15 sc, 1 hdc . (42)
R12: ch 2, then turn, 1 hdc, 15 sc, 26 hdc . (42)
R13: ch 2, then turn, 26 hdc, 15 sl st, 1 hdc . (42)
At this point, verify that the mug cozy fits well around your mug before moving on to the next row.
We’re now going to make the little strap for the button and continuing with the last row where we will make the cat’s ears.
R14: ch 13, then sl st in the 7th loop from the hook, sl st in the 6 remaining loops from ch 13.

Starting from the 1st stitch of the previous round, make 20 sl st, then skip a stitch, 1 hdc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next one, 3 tr in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch, 1 hdc, skip a stitch, 5 sl st, skip a stitch, 1 hdc, 2 dc in the next one, 3 tr in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch, 1 hdc, skip a stitch, 3 sl st.
Cut yarn and weave in ends.
Sew the button in the front of the cozy, on the top left (where we made the ears).
We will now crochet the little tail at the back of the mug cozy.
The Tail
Ch 12
Row 1: 4 sc in the 2nd loop from the hook, 3 sc in the next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in each of the remaining 7 loops of the chain.

Cut yarn and fasten off. Sew the tail on the back of the mug cozy, using the ears, place the tail between them in the center and sew it there.
Cut in the felt fabric the nose and mustache, then glue them on the cat’s face.
You have now completed your cat mug cozy. How do you find it? Isn’t it so cute?

Let me know in the comments down below how much you love your new mug cozy, I can’t wait to hear from you!
This does not work out; in the photo you have 3 stitches left in the row above where you are making the chain 13. The directions are unclear; the next row to make the ears does not work out.
Hello Lana,
Hope you are doing well. I’m happy to help you find out what is going wrong and sort it out.
You are talking about round 14 or round 13, to make sure? I went back to check round 14 and it worked for me. The 3 last stitches of the round are slip stitches. Do you have a total a 42 stitches on round 13 (before making the ch13)?
