Summer’s rolling in, your yarn stash is looking at you like “use me or lose me”, and your table needs something cute to sit your lemonade on. This beach crochet coaster pattern is the answer to all that summer energy just begging to be turned into something handmade (and adorable). This is one of those patterns that looks like you spent way more time on it than you actually did. It’s fast, it’s satisfying, and it adds just the right touch of sunshine to your space.
Maybe you just need something that comes together in a single sitting and makes you feel like you’re actually using your yarn stash for once. Or maybe that rogue cotton skein has been staring at you for weeks, begging for a purpose. This free crochet coaster pattern is that purpose: simple, cute, and absolutely worth every stitch. So let’s begin, shall we?

For the base of the beach crochet coaster, ch 1 and turn at the end of every double crochet (dc) row, and ch 2 and turn at the end of every single crochet (sc) row (this sets you up for the following dc row).
The turning chains do not count as stitches, so make sure to start each new row in the very first available stitch.

No need to cut the yarn, we’re moving straight on to the edge of the beach crochet coaster pattern.
The Edge – Crochet Coaster Free Pattern
Ch 1, work the edge as follow going from left, bottom, right:
- with the sand color: 2 sc, sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc, 1 sc,
- Change color to the light blue: 3 sc, sc inc, 2 sc,
- Change color to middle blue: 5 sc,
- Change color to dark blue: 5 sc, sc inc, 3 sc, sc inc, 15 sc, sc inc, 3 sc, sc inc, 5 sc,
- Change color back to middle blue: 6 sc,
- Change color to light blue: 1 sc, sc inc, 3 sc,
- Change color to sand yellow: 1, inc, 2, inc, 2, inc, 5 sc, cut yarn and finish off the edge with an join invisible.

Once you’re done with the edge of the beach coaster crochet pattern, cut the yarn and weave in all ends.
The Waves – Beach Crochet Coaster Pattern
To create the two wave sections (bottom and middle), we’ll work into the front loops we left unworked in rows 8 and 12. With the sand section of your beach crochet coaster facing down, join the matching yarn color to the front loops of row 8 using a slip stitch, starting on the right side. Then, slip stitch across the entire row in those front loops. Repeat the same process for row 12.

For the foam detail, flip your coaster so the sand side is facing up. Take your white cotton yarn and join it to the first front loop of row 16 on the right-hand side. Then work across the row with the following pattern: (sl st, ch 1). This creates a soft, wavy edge that mimics sea foam. Weave in all ends when you’re finished with the foam and waves of the crochet beach coaster.

The Starfish – Crochet Starfish Pattern
Note: Do not join at the end of each round, continue working in a continuous spiral, amigurumi-style.
Using the metallic gold lace cotton and a 2 mm crochet hook, start with a magic circle.
Round 1: 5 sc (5)
Round 2: sc inc x 5 (10)
R3: (1 sc, ch5, starting 2nd loop from the hook: 4 sc in the ch5 we just made, 1 sc in the next stitch) repeat this 5 times.
R4: {1 sc, in the back side of the previous ch5: 4 sc, continue working on the other side of the prev ch5: (sc inc in the next stitch), 3 sc, then back to the round: 1 sc in the next stitch} repeat this 5 times.
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing at the end of round 4.

The shell – Free Crochet Shell Pattern
Using the pastel lace cotton thread and a 2 mm crochet hook, chain 7. Then starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1: (3 sc in the first loop), 2 sc, 3 sl st, ch1 turn (8)
Row 2: BLO: 3 sl st, 2 sc, sc dec, ch 2 turn (6)
R3: BLO: (3 sc in the 2nd loop from the hook), 3 sc, 3 sl st, ch1 turn (9)
R4: BLO: 3 sl st ,3 sc ,sc dec, ch 2 turn (7)
R5: BLO: (3 sc in the 2nd loop from the hook), 4 sc, 3 sl st, ch1 turn (10)
R6: BLO: 3 sl st, 4 sc, sc dec, ch 2 turn (8)
R7: BLO: (3 sc in the 2nd loop from the hook), 5 sc, 3 sl st, ch1 turn (11)
R8: BLO: 3 sl st, 5 sc, ch1 turn (8)
R9: BLO: (3 sc in the first stitch), 4 sc, 3 sl st, ch1 turn (10)
R10: BLO: 3 sl st, 4 sc, ch1 turn (7)
R11: BLO: (3 sc in the first stitch), 3 sc, 3 sl st, ch 1 turn (9)
R12: BLO: 3 sl st, 3 sc, ch1 turn (6)
R13: BLO: (3 sc in the first stitch), 2 sc, 3 sl st (8)

Ch1, now we will work the bottom edge to this way: sc7tog at the bottom (which is a decrease of 7 single crochet together to form one and only sc), + make a ch 1.

The chain1 we just did create a little loop, we will use it like a magic circle to make the bottom of the shell. Work in that loop:
- Ch2, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, ch 2, sl st back to the little loop.

Start working around the outer edge of the shell:
Side 1: Make 6 single crochets along the first side.
Top Curves:
- In the unworked stitch at the peak of the first top curve, make 3 sc.
- Slip stitch between the two top curves.
- Repeat this sequence three times (3 sc at curve top, sl st between curves).
Middle Curve:
- In the three unworked stitches, make in that order: sc inc, sc inc, 1 sc (5 sc in total).
- Slip stitch in the center between the next curve.
Continue with the next Curves:
Repeat the pattern again:
- 3 sc at the top of the next unworked stitch,
- sl st between the curves do this two more times.
- On the last top curve, make a sc in each of the 3 top stitches (so 3 sc in total).
Side 2: Work 6 single crochets down the other side of the shell.
Finish the edging with an invisible join, and weave in the ends neatly.

Now all that’s left to do is sew your little crochet starfish and shell onto your beach crochet coaster, just like tiny treasures washed up on shore. Once they’re nicely stitched on, that’s it… you did it! Your little summer crochet project is officially done and ready to make waves.
Time to pour yourself a tall glass of lemonade (or whatever feels like summer in a cup), kick back, and admire your handiwork. Whether it’s for your coffee table, your next beachy picnic, or just to make your desk a little more fun, your coaster is now 100% cute and functional. You earned this little island of joy!
