Today, we’re continuing our collection of retro 80s/90s-style items with a project I’ve been wanting to make for months but kept putting off for some unknown reason: the crochet floppy disk wallet!
After creating the mixtape wallet, I knew our retro collection needed another fun addition, and what better design than the iconic floppy disk? This project is quick and easy to make. I wouldn’t say it’s for absolute beginners, but if you’ve got the basics of crochet down, you should definitely give it a shot.
Grab your hooks and let’s rewind to the good old days with this retro project. It’s sure to bring back some serious nostalgia!

Crochet Floppy Disk Wallet Free Pattern
Front Panel
Yarn: Mint yarn
Hook: 3,5 mm hook
Chain 26 and starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1 to 19: 25 sc (25)
Row 20 to 26: 6 sc (6)
R27: 1 sc, sc inc, dec of 4 stitches at the same time (4)
Cut the yarn and fasten off. Go back to the row 19 on the other side of the panel, count 6 stitches and join the yarn back on the 6th stitch with a single crochet. Repeat row 20 to 26 there, and add a row 27: 6 sc (6). Weave in all ends.

Back Panel
Chain 26 and starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1 to 9: 25 sc (25)
Row 10: 11 sc, 3 sl st, 11 sc (25)
R11: 10 sc , 5 sl st, 10 sc (25)
R12: 9 sc, 7 sl st, 9 sc (25)
R13 to 15: 8 sc, 9 sl st , 8 sc (25)
R16: 8 sc, ch 11, skip 9 stitches, 8 sc (25)
R17: 8 sc, sc dec, 7 sl st, sc dec, 8 sc (25)
R18: 10 sc, 5 sl st, 10 sc (25)
R19: 11 sc, 3 sl st, 11 sc (25)
Row 20 to 26: 6 sc (6)
R27: 1 sc, sc inc, dec of 4 stitches at the same time (4)
Cut the yarn and fasten off. Go back to the row 19 on the other side of the panel, count 6 stitches and join the yarn back on the 6th stitch with a single crochet. Repeat row 20 to 26 there, and add a row 27: 6 sc (6). Weave in all ends. I recommend blocking the back panel before attaching the next parts to help it maintain a clean, squared shape.

Middle Pink Disk Round
Yarn: Pink yarn
Hook: 2,5 mm
Chain 4 and starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1: sc inc, 1 sc, sc inc (5)
Row 2: sc inc, 3 sc, sc inc (7)
R3: sc inc, 5 sc, sc inc (9)
R4 to 5: 9 sc (9)
R6: sc dec, 5 sc, sc dec (7)
R7: sc dec, 3 sc, sc dec (5)
R8: sc dec, 1 sc, sc dec (3)
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing. Attach the round piece to the center hole of the back panel of your crochet floppy disk.

Alternative for the back panel
If making the back panel with the hole in the center feels tricky, you can simply replicate the front panel and color change (with a pink yarn) in the middle to create the round disk effect. To make it easier, I’ve included a graph below to guide you!

The floppy disk’s shutter
Yarn: Yellow yarn and the mint yarn too
Hook: 3,5 mm
With the yellow yarn: Chain 9 and starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1 to 7: 8 sc (8)
Row 8 to 9: 1 sc, change color to green: 6 sc, change color back to yellow: 1 sc (8)
Row 10 to 11: 8 sc (8)
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing. You’ll need two shutters: one for the back panel and one for the front. Sew them into the spots we left for them, making sure they’re positioned just like a real floppy disk. And don’t forget, both green parts should be in the same direction.

Sew the panels together and add the zipper
Place the front and back panels on top of each other, aligning the inclined angles so they match perfectly. Sew the sides and bottom together, leaving the top open for the zipper. At the top, only sew along the inclined angles, nowhere else. Once that’s done, attach the zipper in the space left for it.

Kirby shoes, arms and face
With the 2nd shade of pink yarn you have, and the 2,5 mm hook, chain 4. Starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Round 1: 2 sc, (4 sc in the last stitch), continue working on the other side of the foundation chain: 1 sc, (2 sc in the last stitch) (9)
Cut the yarn and make an invisible join. Make two shoes this way. Sew both shoes on each side of the pink round disk, at the bottom.
Cut the eyes and mouth from felt fabric. Once all the shapes are ready, carefully glue them onto the pink circle, aligning them to match Kirby’s face.
For the arms do as follow with the same shade of pink as the round disk:
Make a magic circle.
Row 1: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 sc (3)
Cut the yarn and close the circle tightly. Make two arms this way and sew them on each side of the pink disk.

The label
For the label you have 2 options: make it with crochet using the cream yarn or do it like me, I’ll explain it better below.
Option 1: Crochet the label front and back panels
Yarn: Cream yarn
Hook: 3,5 mm
For the front label: Chain 20 and starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1 to 16: 19 sc (19)
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing. Sew this panel to the front of the crochet floppy disk wallet.

For the back label: Chain 20 and starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1 to 5: 19 sc (19)
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing. Sew this panel to the back of the crochet floppy disk wallet.

To complete the crochet wallet, you can decorate the labels with crochet appliqués or embroider flowers and other details to make it even cuter.
Option 2: Embroidery on cotton fabric
For my label, I’ve made a cute design and printed it on fabric using my inkjet printer. You can learn how to do this in the article I wrote. The design measures 9.5 cm x 11 cm. I embroidered certain details to enhance its look and make it even cuter.

Once the embroidery was complete, I cut the fabric, leaving a 1 cm seam allowance, and then sewed it onto the front and back of my crochet floppy disk wallet.

If you’re interested in printing my design for your crochet wallet, let me know in the comments below! If there’s enough interest, I might add it as a download.

And with that, you’ve officially completed your crochet floppy disk wallet, congrats! 🎉 I’ve got more fun designs inspired by the 80’s and 90’s on the way. My list of ideas is huge, but it takes time to turn them into functional crochet pieces (I love making things that are both cute and useful!). So, stay tuned by bookmarking this site, and if you enjoyed this project, feel free to explore more of my patterns!
See you in the next project or over on my social media if you follow me there. Until then, take care!
Now I wish I had a printer because that label is cute and nostalgic! I love all your nostalgic designs! Ahh, when we were not so afraid of colors. 🙂
Aww thank you so much for your kind words!🌸 I miss those good old days too! 🥺ðŸ˜
