As a huge nostalgic of the 80’s and its aesthetic, I kept thinking about a new retro design I could work on for a wallet pattern. After much thought, I started picturing in my mind a cute and small pastel colored mixtape wallet. When making a sketch to help me visualize the design that I wanted, I managed to figure out how I was going to make each part of the wallet and mixtape design. After going through all this process, I’m going to teach you now, how to crochet a small wallet retro mixtape style.

How to crochet a small wallet Retro Mixtape
We will start by making the base of the wallet first, before making the mixtape design.
For this part we will use the double knitting method, that is to say we will hold the fuzzy yarn and the acrylic yarn of the same color together while crocheting our rows. This will make our wallet more solid.
So with the 5 mm crochet hook and both yarns (fuzzy and acrylic): make a slipknot.
Ch 21
Row 1: starting from the 2nd loop from the hook: make 20 hdc in the loop behind the stitches. (20)
Row 2 to 26: ch 2 then turn, 20 hdc. (20)
You should get a long rectangle of 15 cm x 20,5 cm. Cut yarn and leave a tail for sewing.
Fold the rectangle in 2, in the middle. With the tail of yarn we left, we will sew the first side.
Place the zipper on the opening at the top of the wallet, and sew it on each side, from the inside of the wallet. Make sure that the sewing thread doesn’t show on the outside of the wallet. Once you’re done, turn the wallet right side up and close it by sewing the other side of it.
You have made the base of the wallet. Now we will proceed with the mixtape design that we will sew on the front of the wallet later on.

Now sew or glue all the pieces we made this way: the big rectangle on the back of the frame, and make it our background for the frame. Glue or sew the little rectangle on the big one, on the bottom and in the center of it. Sew the rainbows on each side of the little rectangle. Sew the trapeze on the bottom of the frame.
Cut 2 squares and 2 rounds in your pink felt fabric and glue them on the trapeze. Then with the blue felt fabric make the screws for each corner of the frame.
On a piece of white felt fabric (2,7 cm x 2,4 cm) make a small retro embroidery, and sew it in the corner of your mixtape’s pink background, to add the cherry on the top of this design.
Once you’re done, sew your mixtape on the front of you wallet and you will finally be done!
