Crochet Treasure Chest Jewelry Box
To make our Crochet Treasure Chest Jewelry Box we will start to create the base of the treasure chest, using the 4 mm hook and the pink yarn.
Bottom of the Crochet Treasure Chest
Ch13, and starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Round 1: 11 sc, (3 sc in the last stitch), continue working on the other side of the chain base: 10 sc, (2 sc in the last stitch – which is the 1st loop we started our round with) (26)
Round 2: (3 sc in the 1st stitch), 10 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 1 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 10 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 1 sc (34)
R3: 1sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 12 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 3 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 12 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 2 sc (42)
R4: 2sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 14 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 5 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 14 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 3 sc (50)
R5: 3sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 16 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 7 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 16 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 4 sc (58)
R6: 4sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 18 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 9 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 18 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 5 sc (66)
The base rectangle measures 11,5 cm x 6,5 cm.

R7: 66 BLO sc (66)
R8 to 20: 66 sc (66)
The height of the bottom of the crochet treasure chest is 6,3 cm.

Lid of the Crochet Treasure Chest
We’ll begin by making the sides of the lid, move on to the center section, and finish by sewing everything together.
The Curved Sides
Make a magic circle. We’ll be working in rows rather than rounds, so at the end of each row, chain 1 and turn your work.
Row 1: 5 sc (5)
Row 2: 1 sc , sc inc x 3, 1 sc (8)
R3: 2 sc , sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc, 2 sc (10)
R4: 2 sc, sc inc x 2, 2 sc, sc inc x 2, 2 sc (14)
R5: 3 sc, sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc x 2, 2 sc, sc inc, 3 sc (18)
Chain 1, but do not turn. We’ll work this row along the bottom edge of the curved side to smooth it out: 9 sc, ch 1 sl st in the 1st stitch or row 5. Make 2 curved sides this way.

The middle section
Ch23, and starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1 to 22: 22 sc (22)
Cut the yarn and weave in ends.

Curve the middle section, then position the two curved sides on either end. Insert them into place under the edges of the middle section and sew everything together as shown in the pictures below.

Sew The Plastic Canvas Inside The Chest
The plastic canvas is used here to make the crochet treasure chest sturdy and solid. It provides structure, ensuring the yarn maintains its shape and stands firm. Begin by measuring the interior length and width of the treasure chest’s bottom and lid. Mark these dimensions onto the plastic canvas with a pen or marker. For accuracy, consider making a paper template to trace onto the canvas. Once cut to size, securely sew the plastic canvas into the bottom and lid to reinforce the chest.

The bottom lining
The interior dimensions of the crochet treasure chest (the bottom part) are approximately 10,8 cm W x 6,1 cm L x 6 cm H, so we will crochet the lining accordingly with the white cream yarn and the 4 mm hook.
R5: 3sc, (2 sc in the next stitch), 16 sc, (2 sc in the next stitch), 7 sc, (2 sc in the next stitch), 16 sc, (2 sc in the next stitch), 4 sc (54)
R6 to 14: 54 sc (54)
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.

Place the lining inside the bottom section of the chest, then sew it securely to conceal the plastic canvas and white thread on the exterior, as demonstrated in the pictures below.

The Lid Lining
Make a magic circle. Once again we’ll be working in rows, so at the end of each row, chain 1 and turn your work.
Row 1: 5 sc (5)
Row 2: 1 sc , sc inc x 3, 1 sc (8)
R3: 2 sc, sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc, 2 sc (10)
R4: 2 sc, sc inc x 2, 2 sc, sc inc x 2, 2 sc (14)
R5: 14 FLO sc (14)
R6 to 27: 14 sc (14)
Cut the yarn and fasten off. Make another curved side this way:
Make a magic circle.
Row 1: 5 sc (5)
Row 2: 1 sc , sc inc x 3, 1 sc (8)
R3: 2 sc, sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc, 2 sc (10)
R4: 2 sc, sc inc x 2, 2 sc, sc inc x 2, 2 sc (14)
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing. Sew the curved side to the opposite edge of the main lining we just created to close it, as shown in the pictures below.

Just like with the bottom of the crochet treasure chest, sew the lining inside the lid. Make sure the stitches are hidden on the exterior and that the plastic canvas is completely concealed.

The Hinges
Pick your yellow color yarn and keep the 4 mm hook.
Ch7, starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1 to 3: 6 sc (6)
Row 4: 6 BLO sc (6)
R5 to 6: 6 sc (6)
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing. Make 2 hinges this way.

Start by sewing the hinges to the back of the bottom of the chest. Make sure the unworked front loops from row 4 face the inside of the chest. Next, position the lid carefully on top of the bottom, keeping it well-centered. Once aligned, sew the hinges to the lid. Take extra care to hide the yellow thread, so it doesn’t show on the lining inside.

The trims
We will now crochet the trims to sew along the borders of the crochet treasure chest. Keep your yellow yarn and 4 mm hook to do so. We’ll work on them section by section: front, sides, back, and lid.
Front Trim
Ch59, sl st in the 1st loop of the chain to make a circle. This sl st adds another stitch to the chain making it a total of 60 st.
Starting the very first loop where we made our slip stitch:
Round 1: sc inc, 20 sc, sc inc, 8 sc, sc inc, 20 sc, sc inc, 8 sc (64)
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing. Make an invisible join for a clean finish. Once that’s done, use the yarn tail to carefully sew the front trim along the edges of the bottom front of your crochet treasure chest

Side Trims
Ch37, sl st in the 1st loop of the chain to make a circle. This sl st adds another stitch to the chain making it a total of 38 st.
Starting the very first loop where we made our slip stitch:
Round 1: sc inc, 9 sc, sc inc, 8 sc, sc inc, 9 sc, sc inc, 8 sc (42)
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing. Make 2 side trims this way and sew them on the sides of the treasure chest.

Back Trim
Ch45, this time we will not sl st in the 1st loop, we will start working in the 2nd loop from the hook.
Row 1: 2 sc, sc inc, 8 sc, sc inc, 20 sc, sc inc, 8 sc, sc inc, 2 sc (48)
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing. Sew the trim to the back of the chest, starting from one hinge and continuing to the other. To fill the gap between the hinges, make a small trim like this: Chain 4, then starting in the 2nd loop from the hook, make 3 sc, cut the yarn and fasten off. Sew it in place between the hinges.

Lid Trim
Ch69, starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1: 2 sc, sc inc, 20 sc, sc inc, 20 sc, sc inc, 20 sc, sc inc, 2 sc (72)
Sew the trim to the lid of the chest, starting from one hinge and continuing to the other. Just like the back trim, make the same small trim for the gap between the hinges, and sew it there.

Make another trim, for the middle of the lid this way:
Ch21, and starting the 2nd loop from the hook: 20 sc. Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing. Sew the trim in the middle of the lid.

The Side Trims Of The Lid
Ch27, sl st in the 1st loop of the chain to make a circle. This sl st adds another stitch to the chain making it a total of 28 st.
Round 1: sc inc, 9 sc, sc inc, 5 sc, sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc, 2 sc, sc inc, 5 sc (33)
Make 2 trims this way and sew them on the sides of the lid.

To finish and join the trims at the corners, grab a piece of yarn and whip stitch the edges together where they meet.

The Locket Tab
Ch6, starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1: sc dec, 1 sc, sc dec (3)
Row 2: sc dec of 3 stitches (1)
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing. Slide one half of the magnet beneath the bottom middle trim and partially under the locket tab. Then, sew the locket tab to the center of the bottom of the chest and to the trim to make it magnetic.

The Heart Locket
To create the heart locket, we’ll make two heart appliqués and join them together by single crocheting around both at the same time, slipping another magnet inside as we go. Start your heart locket with purple yarn, and this time, grab your 3 mm crochet hook!
Make a magic circle:
Round 1: Ch3, 3 tr, 4 dc, 1 tr, 4 dc, 3 tr, ch3, sl st back to the magic circle.
Close your magic circle tight, cut the yarn and fasten off for one of the heart, while changing color to the yellow yarn for the other heart. Make 2 hearts this way.

Pull your magic circle tight. Make two hearts like this: cut the yarn, and fasten off for one of the hearts. For the other heart, switch to yellow yarn. Next, place the two hearts face to face, and with the yellow yarn, work the next round by stitching through both hearts at the same time.

Round 2: 2 sc in the previous ch3, sc inc x 2, 5 sc, 1 hdc, 5 sc, sc inc x2, 2 sc in the last ch3
Slide the second magnet between the hearts (at the bottom of the heart) before ending your second round. Position it correctly so it connects with the other magnet, as opposite poles attract, but mismatched sides won’t stick together. When your round is finished, cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.

The Wings
We will make the ings with the white cream yarn and the 3 mm hook. Make a magic circle, note that we will work in rows, so end your row with a ch1 then turn.
Row 1: 3 sc (3)
Row 2: (1 hdc, 2 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc, sl st) in the first stitch, (2 tr, 1 hdc, sl st) in the next stitch, (1 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc, sl st) in the last stitch. (14)
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing. Make 2 wings this way. Sew them to the side of the heart locket.

Finally sew the top of the heart locket to the center of the lid, where the middle line and the main trim meets, to center it perfectly. Let the bottom of the heart dangle below the lid so it can magnetize to the locket tab. And just like that, your crochet treasure chest jewelry box is complete!

I’m having trouble getting the base started. I’ll get 30-40 stitches in and it gets all wonky. I’ve tried adding ch1 or SL st, but it still goes wrong. I’m also not sure where a row begins or ends in comparison to a round
Hello Hannah,
Can you tell me which round you’re having trouble with? The bottom of the chest is worked in rounds, not rows. Also, how are you ending your rounds? Let me know, and I’ll be happy to help!
In my “beginner brain” I was thinking that each comma signified a new row 🤦🏻♀️
That was the problem. Thank you for the help!
Oh, I see! No problem at all 😊 Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need more help! Have fun crocheting this cute treasure chest. 🌸
