Ceramic Tile Coaster DIY with Air Dry Clay

How to Make a Ceramic Tile Coaster DIY with Air Dry Clay

I’ve been wanting to make something like this ceramic tile coaster diy for a while.

Oriental, Islamic, Arab, and North African styles have been some of my biggest sources of inspiration for as long as I can remember.
I’ve always loved this kind of design: the architecture, the decor, the geometric motifs, the colors, the vibe, all of it. There’s just something about those patterns that I never get tired of. They feel detailed and elegant without feeling stiff, and they have that mix of structure and beauty that always draws me in and carries my imagination somewhere beautiful, peaceful, and dreamlike.
So making a ceramic tile inspired coaster felt like a pretty natural project for me.

I wanted to create something that had that painted tile look, but in a way that was simple enough to make at home without needing actual ceramic supplies. That’s where the air dry clay came in. I used self-hardening clay, made a template that I’ll be sharing as a PDF, and then used a cut-out design as a stencil to build up the pattern with paint. It was such a fun process, and one of those projects that looks detailed and impressive without being impossible to make.

In this tutorial, I’m going to show you exactly how I made this diy coaster with air dry clay, step by step, from shaping the clay tile to painting the motif and sealing everything at the end. So let’s begin, shall we?

Materials You’ll Need – DIY Coasters

This air dry clay coaster project is actually very simple in terms of materials:

Step 1: Shape Your Tile Base

Start by rolling out your clay evenly. You want it thick enough to feel sturdy, but not so thick that it looks bulky. Using 5 mm rolling pin guides helps a lot for keeping the thickness nice and even. If you have a 3D printer, you can even print your own set at home; I shared more about that in this article!

Now download my free template and print it out. Then cut out the top design, the rounded square, and use it as your guide to cut the shape of your tile. I went with rounded corners because I wanted to soften the look a little and make it feel cuter, if that makes sense haha.

Smooth the edges with a little bit of water, if needed, then let the clay dry completely before moving on. Once the clay is fully dry, you can lightly sand the edges and surface to smooth everything out and clean up any little imperfections.

Please note that air dry clay naturally shrinks a little as it dries, so a slight decrease in size is completely normal.

Step 2: Turn Your Template Into a Stencil

This is the part that makes everything easier.

Instead of trying to draw the whole pattern by hand, you’re going to turn the printed design into a stencil by carefully cutting it out. To do that, place your template on a cutting mat first so you do not damage your desk or work surface. Then, using a precision knife, slowly cut along the lines of the design.

This is definitely not the step to rush. Go gently, take your time, and let the knife do the work instead of forcing it. Clean, careful cuts will give you a much neater stencil, and that will make a huge difference once you start transferring the design onto the tile.

It takes a bit of patience, but this step makes the rest of the project so much easier afterward.

Step 3: Transfer the Design – Air Dry Clay Coaster

Place your stencil on top of the dried clay tile.

Using a sponge or soft brush, gently tap paint over it. I used a neutral blush pink for this step.

The goal is not to fully paint the tile yet, just to transfer the design clearly enough so you can use it as a guide.

When you lift the stencil, the pattern appears right away, and that is the moment your tile inspired coaster really starts to come to life. Just be sure to peel the stencil off gently before the paint fully dries so it does not stick or pull the paint with it.

Step 4: Paint the Pattern – Tile Inspired Coaster

Now comes the fun part.

Using the transferred design, start painting each section of your coaster. This is where you can really personalize your ceramic tile coaster DIY.

You have two options:

  • Keep the lines white and paint inside the shapes,
  • Paint the entire tile first in the color you want the lines to be, then place the stencil on top and tap over it with another color to mark the different sections. After that, paint each section in whatever colors you want. This way, the lines will stay in your base color instead of ending up white.

Both work beautifully, it just depends on your preference.

For one of my versions, I used a mix of turquoise, warm orange tones, soft pinks, and a deeper red for the center, while the other features rich purple and midnight blue tones accented with gold and hints of turquoise.

Step 5: Paint the Edges and Back

Don’t skip this step.

Painting the sides and the back of your diy coaster with air dry clay makes a huge difference in how finished it looks.

You can paint the back and sides in a neutral shade, or just pick one of the colors from your palette. Either way, it really pulls the whole piece together.

Step 6: Let Everything Dry

Before sealing your air dry clay coaster, make sure the paint is fully dry.

Not “almost dry.” Actually dry.

This prevents smudging and keeps your design clean when you apply the final coat.

Step 7: Seal Your Coaster

To protect your diy coasters, you’ll need to seal them.

You can use:

  • UV resin for a glossy, ceramic-like finish
  • or a strong glossy varnish for a simpler option

This step is essential. It protects the paint, strengthens the surface, and helps prevent moisture from damaging the clay.

It also makes your coaster look way more cool!

And that’s it.

You now have a ceramic tile coaster DIY that looks detailed, structured, and completely unique.

What I love about this project is that it gives you that intricate tile look without the complexity. The stencil does most of the work, and the rest is just about playing with color and enjoying the process.

You can also experiment with different colors and create a whole set of diy coasters with different variations.
