Make These Cute Crochet Donut Coasters Now With Me

One of my favorite things to crochet is coasters! When I learned to crochet, it became the perfect way to create ones that matched my style, especially since finding the perfect designs wasn’t always easy. I’ve been wanting to make donut-shaped coasters for a while now. And let’s be real, there’s no shortage of crochet donut coasters patterns out there! But I wanted to add my own little twist by creating a bakery-style box to store them when not in use. So, I figured if I was making them anyway, why not share the pattern on my website with you all?

And that brings us here! Today, I’m excited to show you how you can crochet this adorable coaster set, box included, with ease. Let’s get started!

Material – Crochet Donut Coasters

Abbreviations

ch: chain

sl st: slip stitch

sc: single crochet

inc: increase

dec: decrease

BLO: back loops only

R: round / row

Notes

Every rounds ends with a slip stitch into the 1st stitch of the round, unless it says otherwise.

The 1st round are always worked in the back loops of the foundation chain stitches.

For the box, we’ll hold two strands of yarn together to create a bulky-weight effect, this will make the box sturdier.

The gauge for the beige yarn (with the 4,5 mm hook) is: 8 sc x 9 rows = 5 cm x 5 cm.

For the sport weight yarn (with the 3,5 mm hook), the gauge is: 11 sc x 11 rows = 5 cm x 5 cm.

The gauge for the hot pink worsted weight yarn (with the 6 mm hook and two strands of yarn held together) is: 13 sc x 13 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm.

Each coaster measures 10 cm in diameter. With the lid on, the box measures 16 cm (W) × 14.5 cm (L) × 7.5 cm (H).

Donut Coaster Crochet Pattern

The Donuts

Crochet size: 3,5 mm and 4,5 mm

Yarn: worsted cotton beige and dk cotton yarn

To start this crochet donut coasters pattern, we will first use the beige cotton yarn and the 4,5 mm hook: chain 17, then slip stitch in the 1st loop of the chain to form a circle. This will create a 18th loop in the process. Starting the very first loop (the one where we did our slip stitch):

Round 1: 18 sc (18)

Round 2: (2 sc, sc inc) x 6 (24)

R3: (3 sc, sc inc) x 6 (30)

R4: (4 sc, sc inc) x 6 (36)

R5: (5 sc, sc inc) x 6 (42)

R6: (6 sc, sc inc) x 6 (48)

R7: (7 sc, sc inc) x 6 (54)

Cut the yarn and weave in the ends. The edges should curl slightly inward because we began the first round with 18 single crochets, the same number as the foundation chain, without increasing. This shaping is intentional for my donuts, but if you’d like a perfectly flat donut, simply start with Round 2 instead and skip the “18 sc” round. Keep in mind that you may need to add an extra increase round to reach the 10 cm diameter of the coaster. (For example, add an R8: (8 sc, sc inc) × 6 (60)).

The Frosting For The Crochet Donut

Using the sport weight cotton yarn and a 3.5 mm hook, start by chaining 21. Slip stitch into the first chain to form a circle, this will naturally create a 22nd loop. From here, begin working in rounds in the amigurumi style without joining at the end of each round, starting in the very first stitch where you made the slip stitch:

Round 1: 22 sc (22)
Round 2: (2 sc, sc inc) x 3, (1 sc, sc inc) x 2, (2 sc, sc inc) x 3 (30)
R3 : (4 sc, sc inc) x 6 (36)

R4 : (5 sc, sc inc) x 6 (42)

R5 : (6 sc, sc inc) x 6 (48)

R6 : (7 sc, sc inc) x 6 (54)

R7 : (8 sc, sc inc) x 6 (60)

At the end of Round 7, work 2 single crochets followed by 2 slip stitches, then cut the yarn and use an invisible join to complete your frosting circle. The frosting is designed to have a slightly uneven shape for a natural, drippy look while staying flat in the center. This is to make sure the coaster remains level, providing a stable surface for cups and mugs.

Sew or glue the frosting to the top of the donut base. Then, add any details you like, such as sprinkles or syrup drizzles. Repeat this process to make a total of four donuts. The edges of the base should curve inward if you followed my way of making it.

The Donuts Box

The Bottom

Crochet size: 6 mm

Yarn: Hot pink worsted weight yarn

With two strands of yarn held together we’re going to crochet the whole box (bottom and lid).

Chain 6, starting the 2nd loop from the hook:

Round 1: 4sc, (3 sc in the last stitch), continue working on the other side of the foundation chain: 3sc, (2 sc in the last stitch).

Round 2: (3 sc in the first stitch), 3 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 1 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 3 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 1 sc (20).

R3: 1 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 5sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 3 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 5 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 2 sc (28).

R4: 2 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 7 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 5 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 7 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 3 sc (36).

R5: 3 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 9 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 7 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 9 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 4 sc (44).

R6: 4 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 11 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 9 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 11 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 5 sc (52).

R7: 5 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 13 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 11 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 13 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 6 sc (60).

R8: 6 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 15 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 13 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 15 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 7 sc (68).

The bottom base measures 14,5 cm x 13 cm at this point.

R9: 68 BLO sc (68).

R10 to 17: 68 sc (68).

The height of the bottom of the box is 6,5 cm. Cut the yarn and weave in all ends.

The Lid

Chain 51, then slip stitch into the first chain to form a circle, this will naturally create a 52nd loop. Starting the very first loop (the one where we did our slip stitch):

Round 1: (3 sc in the first stitch), 13 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 11 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 13 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 11 sc (60).

Round 2: 1 sc, (3 sc in the first stitch), 15 sc, (3 sc in the first stitch), 13 sc, (3 sc in the first stitch), 15 sc, (3 sc in the first stitch), 12 sc (68).

R3: 2 sc, (3 sc in the first stitch), 17 sc, (3 sc in the first stitch), 15 sc, (3 sc in the first stitch), 17 sc, (3 sc in the first stitch), 13 sc (76).

R4: 76 BLO sc (76)

R5 to 6: 76 sc (76)

Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Middle bottom of the lid

Join the yarn with a single crochet in the first free stitch at the bottom right corner of the lid’s interior, as shown in the picture below. Work the following rows in this manner.

Row 1 to 2: 13 sc (13)

Cut the yarn and weave in the ends. Sew both sides of these two rows to the sides of the lid’s interior.

Now grab you yarn back, and make a magic circle. We will work this in rows, so chain 1 and turn at the end of each row.

Row 1: 3 sc (3)
Row 2: sc inc, 1 sc, sc inc (5)
R3: sc inc x 5 (10)
R4: (1 sc, sc inc) x 5 (15)

Now, skip the chain 1. We’ll work into the bottom of this half-circle as follows:

R5: sc inc, 5 sc, sc inc, sl st in the first sc of the previous row.

Take your half-circle and leave two stitches unworked on each side of the bottom rows you made earlier. Sew the piece in the center, as shown in the pictures below.

The Tiny Crochet Donut Cat

Crochet size: 3,5 mm

Yarn: worsted cotton beige and embroidery floss for the sprinkles

To make the crochet donut cat start by chain 5, then slip stitch into the first chain to form a circle, this will naturally create a 6th loop. Starting the very first loop (the one where we did our slip stitch):

Round 1: sc inc x 6 (12)
Round 2: (1 sc, sc inc) x 6 (18)
R3: 1 sc, (1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc) in the next stitch, 2 sl st, (1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc) in the next stitch, 1 sc, 1 sl st

Then cut the yarn and finish with an invisible join. Weave in all ends. Cut a piece of felt fabric to create the frosting drips, and two triangular shapes to make the inside of the ears. Then use embroidery floss to add the sprinkles.

The Donuts Letters

Crochet size: 3,5 mm

Yarn: sport weight cotton yarn of different colors

Here’s a chart with the pattern for each letter. For the “T,” sew the bottom section to the top bar before attaching the letter to the lid.

Once you’ve finished all the letters, sew the cat donut and the letters to the lid.

Cut a piece of transparent paper to fit inside the lid, then glue it from the inside to complete the donut box.

And voilà! Your crochet donut coasters box is complete! Now you can invite your friends over for a tea party and show off your adorable set of colorful coasters, complete with a matching storage box. How fun is that?!
