DIY Crochet Ring Pop Pattern – A Sweet 90s-Inspired Treat

There was a time — not that long ago — when the fanciest thing you could wear wasn’t from a jewelry store, but straight from the candy aisle. We wore them like crown jewels, sticky fingers and all, thinking we were the height of glam. And honestly? We kinda were. So, with a little yarn and a whole lot of nostalgia, I’ve brought that iconic candy back to life as a crochet ring pop.

It’s sweet, it’s playful, and it’s definitely a blast from the past. Oh, and did I mention? It’s a free pattern, because what’s the fun in having all the joy to myself when I can share it with you? So grab your hook, channel that inner kid (she’s always lurking), and let’s crochet a little sweetness into the world!

The Gem of The Crochet Ring Pop

Start by making a magic circle with your first color.

Round 1: 4 sc (4)

Round 2: sc inc x 4 (8)

R3: sc inc x 8 (16)

R4: (1 sc, sc inc) x 8 (24)

We will now start working in rows.

R5: 3 sc BLO (3)

R6: 1 sc, sc inc, 1 sc (4)

R7: 4 sc (4)

R8: 1 sc, sc inc, 2 sc (5)

R9: 5 sc BLO (5)

R10 to 11: 5 sc (5)

R12: 2 sc, sc dec, 1 sc (4)

R13: 1 sc, sc dec, 1 sc (3)

R14 to 15: 3 sc (3)

R16: 1 sc, sc dec (2)

Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.

Next, you’ll repeat rows 5 to 16 several times. Each time, begin again at round 4 by joining your yarn to the first available – back loop only – stitch just after the leaf-like shape you made earlier. By the end, you’ll have a total of 8 leaf shapes.

To begin the next “leaf,” return to round 4 and join your yarn in the first free stitch (in the back loop only) after the 3 stitches used for the previous leaf. Then repeat rows 5 to 16 as before. Continue this process all around until you have 8 leaves in total (see picture below).

Once all your leaves are ready, it’s time to assemble them. With your gem facing right side up, take two leaves and place them together so that their wrong sides are touching. This way, both right sides will be visible once they’re sewn. Sew them together along the edge, making sure to create a crisp, visible fold between the two, just like in the photos below. Sew each leaf to its neighboring leaf to gradually shape the gem.

To finish the gem

On the bottom part of the gem, join the yarn back with a single crochet, in one of the 2 sc of a leaf.

Round 17: 16 sc (work 1 sc in each of the 2 sc from the 16th row) (16)

Lightly stuff the gem with polyester fiber, just a little! Avoid overfilling it, as the gem shouldn’t puff up or lose its shape because of the stuffing.

Round 18: sc dec x 8 (8)

R19: BLO sc dec x 4 (4)

Cut the yarn and do not close the hole just yet. Leave a tail for sewing.

The Ring Base

With your second color of yarn, make a magic circle.

Round 1: 6 sc (6)
Round 2: sc inc x 6 (12)
R3: (1 sc, sc inc) x 6
R4: (2 sc, sc inc) x 6
R5: (3 sc, sc inc) x 6
R6: (4 sc, sc inc) x6
R7: (5 sc, sc inc) x 6

Make two rounds using this method. For one of them, be sure to leave the center of the magic ring slightly open, just enough to slide the craft wire through it.

Prepare the craft wire by shaping its base into a flat circle. This round base will sit in between the two round we just made and provide support. Then, bend the wire upwards from the center to form a straight bar, long enough to go through the holes of the top round and into the bottom of the gem. This bar acts as an internal support, like an armature, helping the gem stay upright and preventing it from drooping over time (see pictures below).

Once you’ve inserted the wire through the hole in the top part of the base, place the bottom part underneath. Sew the two parts together to secure the wire in place and neatly conceal it inside.

The Ring Band

The top of the band

Chain 3, then starting the 2nd loop from the hook:

Row1: sc inc x 2 (4)
Row 2 to 16: 4 sc (4)
R17: sc dec x 2 (2)

Cut the yarn and fasten off.

The Bottom Of The Band

Chain 3, then starting the 2nd loop from the hook:

Row1: sc inc x 2 (4)
Row 2 to 14: 4 sc (4)
R15: sc dec x 2 (2)

Cut the yarn and fasten off.

Prepare a piece of wire to slide between the two bands, keeping it concealed inside. Place the top band over the bottom band, then start sewing the left and right sides together. Once those are secured, continue stitching along the front and back edges to create a croissant-like shape. The wire tucked inside works like a little backbone, it helps the ring keep that perfect semi-circle shape and gives it just the right amount of grip to hug the finger snugly.

Sew everything together, and you’re all set! Your Crochet Ring Pop is now finished!
