When I first started crocheting, I quickly became obsessed with mug cozies, I just had to have one. But since I couldn’t find a cat mug cozy crochet pattern that matched my love for all things kawaii, I decided to create my own. With just a few basic crochet techniques and the knowledge of how to increase stitches for rounded shapes, I designed one of my very first patterns: the crochet cat mug cozy. In this article, I’ll guide you step by step through the process so you can make your own adorable crochet cat mug cozy too.

Materials Needed – Crochet Cat Mug Cozy
Abbreviations
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
sl st: slip stitch
hdc: half double crochet
dc: double crochet
tr: treble crochet
R: round/row

Ch 46, then join with a sl st into the first chain to form a circle. Make sure the chain fits perfectly around your mug.

Round 1: ch 1, and starting the first free stitch, make 45 hdc. (go through the loops behind the stitches for a better result) At the end: sl st in the 1st stitch of the round. (45)
From now on, we will work in rows instead of rounds in order to leave an open space for the mug’s handle.
Row 2: 2 sl st, ch 1, 42 hdc (42). This open space is where the mug’s handle will fit.
Row 3 to 10: ch 2, then turn, 42 hdc. (42)
R11: ch 2, then turn, 26 hdc, 15 sc, 1 hdc . (42)
R12: ch 2, then turn, 1 hdc, 15 sc, 26 hdc . (42)
R13: ch 2, then turn, 26 hdc, 15 sl st, 1 hdc . (42)
Pause here to test the fit, your crochet mug cozy should sit nicely around the cup before you move on.
Next, we’ll create the small button strap and finish with the last row, where the cat’s ears take shape.
R14: ch 13, then sl st in the 7th loop from the hook, sl st in the 6 remaining loops from ch 13.

Starting from the 1st stitch of the previous round, make 20 sl st, then skip a stitch, 1 hdc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next one, 3 tr in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch, 1 hdc, skip a stitch, 5 sl st, skip a stitch, 1 hdc, 2 dc in the next one, 3 tr in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch, 1 hdc, skip a stitch, 3 sl st.
Cut yarn and weave in ends.
Attach the button on the front of the crochet cat mug cozy, positioning it on the top left near the ears.
We will now crochet the little tail at the back of the mug cozy.

This does not work out; in the photo you have 3 stitches left in the row above where you are making the chain 13. The directions are unclear; the next row to make the ears does not work out.
Hello Lana,
Hope you are doing well. I’m happy to help you find out what is going wrong and sort it out.
You are talking about round 14 or round 13, to make sure? I went back to check round 14 and it worked for me. The 3 last stitches of the round are slip stitches. Do you have a total a 42 stitches on round 13 (before making the ch13)?
