Today’s design has been on my mind for a few months now. I hesitated for a while due to doubts about making it, but creating the Onigiri Bag and Coin Purse recently inspired me to take the leap and present this super cute and original design to you. If you love sushi, cute items, and bags, then this pattern is perfect for you! Join me in making this adorable Crochet Sushi Bag, and let’s create your next favorite accessory together!
Material – Crochet Sushi Bag
- I used a lurex and acrylic eyelash yarn from the brand Ayda Isil Kristal. I purchased it at a local shop in my country, but I found an Etsy store called HandyFamily Shop that sells it online (just to clarify, I didn’t buy my yarn from there). If you’d like to use the same yarn, you’ll need two balls since we’ll be working with two strands held together. I used color number 1231, but color 201 (black) would also work well. Alternatively, you can choose any yarn (preferably cotton or nylon) suitable for a 7mm crochet hook that is sturdy enough to hold its shape and support the weight of the sushis and the clear vinyl fabric.
- Amigurumi DK yarns of different colors: yellow, magenta, orange, black.
- Cotton white yarn (sport weight)
- A 2,5 mm and 7 mm crochet hooks
- A 20 cm zipper
- Clear vinyl fabric
- 2 D-rings (3 cm)
- A chain strap
- Embroidery threads
- Polyester fiberfill
- Optional: a plastic canva to sew at the bottom of the bag to prevent it from sagging.

hdc : half double crochet
dc : double crochet
tr : treble crochet

dec : decrease
BLO : back loops only
R : round / row
Notes – Crochet Sushi Bag
Every round ends with a sl st in the 1st stitch of the round, unless it says otherwise. Every row ends with a ch1 then turn.
We will work on the body of the bag using two strands of yarn simultaneously.
The gauge for the main yarn of the bag is measured with the two strands held together: 10 x 10 cm =13 sc x 14 rows.
The gauge for the amigurumi DK yarn: 5 x 5 cm = 13 sc x 15 rows.
For the white sport yarn, the gauge is: 5 x 5 cm = 15 sc x 17 rows.
The dimensions of the finished bag are: 22 cm (L) x 10 cm (W) x 14 cm (H).

Crochet Sushi Bag Pattern
Body of the bag
You need: the main yarn and the 7 mm crochet hook. Keep in mind that you’ll need to work the entire bag (excluding the sushi) with two strands of yarn held together if you’re using the same yarn as I am.
Ch 19, starting the 2nd loop from the hook, and in the back loop of the stitches:
Round 1: 17 sc, (4 sc in the last stitch), continue working on the other side of the chain: 16 sc, (3 sc in the last stitch of the round) (40)
Round 2: (3 sc in the 1st stitch), 16 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 2 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 16 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 2 sc. (48)
R3: 1 sc, (3 sc in the 1st stitch), 18 sc, (3 sc in the 1st stitch), 4 sc, (3 sc in the 1st stitch), 18 sc, (3 sc in the 1st stitch), 3 sc. (56)
R4: 2 sc, (3 sc in the 1st stitch), 20 sc, (3 sc in the 1st stitch), 6 sc, (3 sc in the 1st stitch), 20 sc, (3 sc in the 1st stitch), 4 sc. (64)
This forms the bottom of the bag, with current dimensions of approximately 20 cm by 6.5 cm.
R5: 64 sc BLO (64)
R6 to 23: 64 sc (64)
The bag now stands at a height of 14 cm. Cut the yarn and fasten off.
The Top of the Bag – Crochet Sushi Bag
Next, we’ll divide the top of the bag into four sections: front, back, and sides. Allocate 24 stitches each for the front and back, and 8 stitches for each side. Ensure all sections are aligned properly to maintain a well-centered, rectangular shape.
Start with the front of the bag and join the yarn by making a single crochet in the back loop of the first stitch, out of the 24 stitches designated for the front section.
Row 24: 24 sc BLO (24)
Row 25 to 26: 24 sc (24)
Before fastening off, cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing.
Repeat the same process for the back section by following rows 24 to 26 again.
Now that you have completed the top of the bag, sew the sides of rows 24 to 26 to the bag’s sides. Attach them to the first three stitches of the eight on each side, leaving two stitches in the middle open to create a space for the zipper.
Sew the Zipper
Flip your bag upside down to sew the zipper from the inside. Make sure to position the zipper correctly to avoid sewing it in the wrong direction. This is also a great time to secure the plastic canvas to the bottom, giving your bag a sturdy base and preventing sagging.
The Strap Tabs
Chain 4, then starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1 to 5: 3 sc (3)
Insert the tab through the middle of the D-ring, then fold it in half. Make a single crochet to secure the tab by working through both stitches of the first and last rows simultaneously.
Sew the tabs to each side of the bag, positioning them near the top around row 20 or 21.
The Front Frame – Crochet Sushi Bag
Chain 67, then slip stitch into the first chain to form a circle, creating a total of 68 loops. Starting in the first loop where the slip stitch was made, work in the back loop of each stitch as follows:
Round 1: (3 sc in the 1st loop), 20 sc, (3 sc in the next loop), 12 sc, (3 sc in the next loop), 20 sc, (3 sc in the next loop), 12 sc, (76)
Round 2: 1 sc, sc inc, 22 sc, sc inc, 14 sc, sc inc, 22 sc, sc inc, 13 sc (80)
R3: 80 sc BLO (80)
Cut the yarn and leave a long tail for sewing.
Cut a piece of clear vinyl fabric slightly smaller than the frame to fit in the center, and sew it in place from the inside of the frame.
The Sushis – Crochet Sushi Bag
The Maki Rolls (x2)
You need: the white cotton yarn, the black amigurumi yarn, the 2,5 mm hook, the polyester fiber and some embroidery threads.
For the rice ball, pick the white yarn make a magic circle.
Round 1: 6 sc (6)
Round 2: sc inc x 6 (12)
R3: (1 sc, sc inc) x 6 (18)
R4: (2 sc, sc inc) x 6 (24)
R5: (3 sc, sc inc) x 6 (30)
R6: 30 sc BLO (30)
R7 to 11: 30 sc (30)
R12: BLO (3 sc, sc dec) x 6 (24)
R13: (2 sc, sc dec) x 6 (18)
Insert some fiberbill to stuff the maki.
R14: (1 sc, sc dec) x 6 (12)
R15: sc dec x 6 (6)
Cut the yarn and use a yarn needle to close the remaining hole.
For the seaweed pick the black yarn:
Ch 5, then starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
R1 to 22: 4 sc (4)
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.
Wrap the seaweed around the rice ball, and stitch the ends together by sewing through the front loops of the stitches. Then, secure the seaweed by sewing it to the rice ball.
Use the embroidery threads of different colors to stitch the filling on the top of the rice balls. Make 2 maki rolls this way.
The sushi rice
This rice ball will serve as the base for the remaining sushi pieces we’ll be making, so you’ll need to make four of them. We will be using the amigurumi technique for this, so you won’t join the rounds at the end; just continue working in a continuous spiral.
Back with the cotton yarn, chain 6. Starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Round 1: 4 sc, (3 sc in the last stitch), continue working on the other side of the chain: 3 sc, (2 sc in the last stitch) (12)
Round 2: sc inc, 3 sc, sc inc x 3, 3 sc, sc inc x 2 (18)
R3 to 14: 18 sc (18)
Fill the rice ball with some polyester fiber at the end of round 14.
R15: sc dec x 2, 3 sc, sc dec x 3, 3 sc, sc dec (12)
Cut the yarn and use a yarn needle to close the remaining hole.
The sake and the maguro sushis
You need the magenta and orange amigurumi yarns, and a little tail of the white cotton yarn for the sake sushi. Chain 2, then in the 1st loop of the chain:
Row 1: 3 sc (3)
Row 2: sc inc, 1 sc, sc inc (5)
R3: sc inc, 3 sc, sc inc (7)
R4: sc inc, 5 sc, sc inc (9)
R5: sc inc, 7 sc, sc inc (11)
R6: sc inc, 8 sc, sc dec (11)
R7: sc dec, 8 sc, sc inc (11)
R8: sc inc, 8 sc, sc dec (11)
R9: sc dec, 8 sc, sc inc (11)
R10: sc dec, 7 sc, sc dec (9)
R11: sc dec, 5 sc, sc dec (7)
R12: sc dec, 3 sc, sc dec (5)
R13: sc dec, 1, sc dec (3)
R14: sc dec of 3 stitches together (1)
Cut the yarn and weave in the ends. Make one of this in the magenta color (for the maguro) and one in orange (salmon).
Leave the maguro like this and sew it to a sushi rice.
While sew some diagonal lines to the salmon sushi before sewing it to a sushi rice.
The Tamago nigiri
You need the yellow and black amigurumi yarns. With the yellow yarn chain 6, then starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1: sc inc, 3 sc, sc inc (7)
Row 2 to 12: 11 sc (11)
R3: sc dec, 3 sc, sc dec (5)
Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.
To make the little piece of seaweed, grab your black yarn and chain 21. Then starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Row 1: 20 hdc (20)
Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.
Sew the yellow section onto the sushi rice ball, then wrap the black part around the middle to create a tamago sushi and secure them together with stitches.
The Shrimp Sushi
You need the orange yarn. I personally colored it with a fabric paint to give it a nice gradient.
Ch 12, then starting the 2nd loop from the hook:
Round 1: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 7 tr, (5 tr in the last stitch), continue working on the other side of the chain: 7 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, sl st in the same stitch then ch 4, starting the 2nd loop from the hook: 2 sl st, 1sc, sl st back in the same stitch then again: ch 4, starting the 2nd loop from the hook: 2 sl st, 1sc, sl st back in the same stitch.
Cut the yarn and weave in the ends. Sew the shrimp to the last rice ball.
Finish your bag – Crochet Sushi Bag
Returning to the bag, take your sushi pieces and sew them onto the front panel in your desired arrangement, ensuring they are centered and visible once the frame is attached. I recommend placing a drop of glue in the center of each sushi to hold them in place for easier sewing.
Once they are sewn in place, position the frame we made earlier on top, centering it before sewing it to the front of the bag. Attach the frame by stitching through the front loops of the last round only. Sew the top of the frame to the front loops of row 23 from the body of the bag. Repeat this process for the bottom by sewing the front loops of the last round of the frame to the front loops of round 5. Secure the sides as well, and you’re finished! Just attach the chain strap to the D-rings, and your bag is complete!
