Crochet Brick Phone Pattern: Retro 90s Phone

There was a time when phones were huge, heavy, and definitely not made to fit in a pocket. And honestly? I kind of miss that. This crochet brick phone pattern is my little yarn version of the great-great-great-grandfather of the sleek new phones we have today. I gave it soft pastel colors and all the little details that make it feel playful instead of clunky, with that girly-pop look I loved as a child and still love now.

If you’re in the mood to make something that feels a bit different from the usual, this retro crochet pattern is such a fun one. It really has the energy of growing up in an era when technology was weirdly bulky, slightly ugly, and somehow still iconic. So grab your hooks and let’s get started!

The finished crochet brick phone measures 28 cm tall (excluding the antenna; the antenna alone measures 13 cm), 10 cm deep, and 8 cm wide.

Gauge for the main yarns: 11 sc x 12 rows = 5 x 5 cm.

Each round ends with a sl st in the first stitch of the round, and each row ends with a ch 1, then turn. The only exception is the antenna, which is worked in continuous amigurumi rounds, without joining at the end of each round.

Body Of The Phone

With your main color yarn and the 4 mm crochet hook, chain 8. Starting the 2nd loop from the hook:

Round 1: sc inc, 5 sc, (4 sc in the last stitch of the chain), continue working on the other side of the chain base: 5 sc, sc inc into the same stitch where we started the round. (18)

Round 2: 1 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 5 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 2 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 5 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 1 sc (26)

R5: 4 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 11 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 8 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 11 sc, (3 sc in the next stitch), 4 sc (50)

R7 to 9: 58 sc (58)

From this point on, we will work in rows rather than rounds. To do this, divide the stitches as follows: the front section (the side with 10 sc) will now have 11 stitches total; the 10 center stitches plus 1 adjacent stitch to better center the middle of the crochet brick phone. The remaining 47 stitches will make up the rest of the outer edge. See the photo below.

Turn the phone inside out before sewing. Then sew the front panel to the side edges of the phone, starting at the top. First, line up the top of the front panel with the top edge of the phone so both pieces are centered correctly. Then sew down each side, matching the rows one by one as you go, and gently following the curved shape of the phone to keep everything neat and even.

Stuff the brick phone crochet pattern with polyester fiberfill, then align the top piece with the rest of the body and sew it in place, making sure both sides line up evenly. Join the pieces by sewing through the front loops of the stitches. Once finished, weave in all remaining ends.

Adding the Speaker and Earpiece Details

Using the purple yarn and a yarn needle, add the little audio details to the front of the phone. For the speaker at the bottom, simply make a small horizontal stitch in the center, as shown in the photo. For the earpiece at the top, weave the yarn horizontally through the stitches across the upper front of the phone, then pull gently to create a slightly indented effect. This will give the top of the phone that recessed look where the sound comes out. Adjust the tension little by little until you like how it looks, then secure the yarn ends inside the crochet brick phone.

Well… now you have a crochet brick phone, which is honestly a ridiculous thing to make out of yarn in the best possible way.

It’s chunky, retro, colorful, and way cuter than the real thing ever was. That’s exactly why I loved turning it into a free crochet pattern. It has that 90’s vibe and charm, but in soft pastel colored yarn form, which somehow makes it even better. If you made it all the way to the end, I hope you had fun with the little details and gave your phone its own personality along the way.

This is my favorite kind of project to design: a little piece of the past, reimagined through my millennial eyes with a touch of pastel color and cute details that make it extra adorable. A good retro crochet pattern should be a little unexpected, a little playful, and just weird enough to look amazing on a shelf. So I hope your finished phone makes you smile every time you see it, and if you feel like making more fun things after this, there are plenty more free crochet patterns waiting for you around here.
