Crochet Sun Hat Pattern – Strawberry Hat Perfect For Summer

What do you get when you mix sunshine, yarn, and a sprinkle of crochet cottagecore charm? This crochet sun hat pattern! Sweet, whimsical, and just the right thing to top off your summer look. I designed this pattern with care, thinking of sunny afternoons, garden walks, and that effortless charm we all love in handmade things. The strawberries? Oh, they’re just the cherry on top, or perhaps I should say the berry on the brim – wink -. Let’s turn that ball of raffia yarn into something berry adorable, shall we?

Notes – Crochet Summer Hat Pattern

The finished crochet sun hat is sized to fit an adult woman. You can easily adjust the size by adding or removing rounds from the crown base, then adapting the rest of the pattern to match.

The gauge for the raffia yarn is: 10 x 10 cm = 17 sc x 20 rows.

The entire hat is worked in continuous rounds, without joining at the end of each round, just like in amigurumi.

The final round of the brim is worked around the craft wire, which not only makes the brim sturdier, but also lets you shape it however you like; straight, wavy, or even with a bit of a cowboy hat flair. It’s fully bendable, so you can play with the style until it’s just right.

To make the ribbon bow I used this method.

Grab your raffia yarn and your 4 mm crochet hook and make a magic circle.

R3: (1 sc, sc inc) x 6 (18)

R5: (3 sc, sc inc) x 6 (30)

R6: (4 sc, sc inc) x 6 (36)

R14: (12 sc, sc inc) x 6 (84)

R15: (13 sc, sc inc) x 6 (90)

By this point, the crown base should measure around 16 cm in diameter.

R16: 90 sc (90)

R17: (14 sc, sc inc) x 6 (96)

R18 to 36: 96 sc (96)

The hat has reached a height of 11 cm, time to move on to the brim!

R37: (15 sc, sc inc) x 6 (102)

R38: (5 sc, sc inc) x 17 (119)

R39: 119 sc (119)

R40: (16 sc, sc inc) x 7 (126)

R41: (6 sc, sc inc) x 18 (144)

R42: 144 sc

R43: (17 sc, sc inc) x 8 (152)

R44: (7 sc, sc inc) x 19 (171)

R45: 171 sc

R46: (18 sc, sc inc) x 9 (180)

R47: (8 sc, sc inc) x 20 (200)

R48: 200 sc

R49: (19 sc, sc inc) x 10 (210)

This next round will be worked around the craft wire, which helps stiffen the brim and keep its shape:

R50: (20 sc, sc inc) x 10 (220)

Cut the yarn and weave in any remaining ends, the hat is done! The brim measures approximately 7 cm wide. Now let’s move on to the strawberries to add that extra touch of charm.

The Strawberries – Crochet Summer Hat

With your red amigurumi yarn and your 3 mm crochet hook and make a magic circle.

Round 1: 4 sc (4)

Round 2: (1 sc, sc inc) x 2 (6)

R3: sc inc x 6 (12)

R4: 12 sc (12)

R5: (1 sc, sc inc) x 6 (18)

R6: sc dec x 9 (9)

R7: (1 sc, sc dec) x 3 (6)

Fill the strawberries with some polyester fiberfill for stuffing and close the hole with the yarn needle.

The Strawberry’s Calyx

With your green amigurumi yarn and your 3 mm crochet hook and make a magic circle.

Round 1: 5 sc (5)

Round 2: sl st into the 1st sc of previous round, {(ch3, starting the 2nd loop from the hook: 1 sc, 1 hdc), sl st into the next stitch} repeat this a total of 5 times.

Cut the yarn and fasten off. Now grab your yarn again, we’re adding a tiny stem on top of the calyx.

Here’s how:
Chain 3, then starting in the second chain from the hook, make 2 slip stitches. Cut the yarn and sew the little stem to the center of the calyx.

Once that’s done, attach the calyx to the top of the strawberry using either sewing or glue , whichever you prefer.

Repeat to make a total of 4 strawberries.

The Leaves – Strawberry Hat Crochet Pattern

With your green amigurumi yarn and your 3 mm crochet hook and chain 8. Starting the 2nd loop from the hook:

Round 1: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, sl st in the last loop of the chain, ch 1, then continue working along the other side of the starting chain; make 1 sc into the next loop (the one just after the slip stitch you made), 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, sl st in the first 1 sc of the round.

Round 2: (ch 2, sl st in the next stitch) x 5, ch1, sl st in the last loop of the starting chain, ch 1, sl st in the next stitch, (ch2, sl st in the next stitch) x 5, ch 2 then sl st into the first sc of previous round.

Cut the yarn and fasten off. Make a total of 4 leaves using the same method.

Next, pair the leaves in twos by joining them at the tips, right where you made the slip stitch into the last loop of the starting chain. Once they’re connected, glue or sew 2 strawberries onto each leaf pair (as shown in the photo below).

Repeat the same steps with the remaining 2 leaves and 2 strawberries.

Final touch

Cut a piece of ribbon and sew it around the hat, just above the brim of the crochet summer hat. Tie a bow and attach it to the back of the hat, right on the ribbon. Finally, sew the strawberries onto the ribbon along the front sides of the crochet strawberry hat, and just like that, it’s ready to shine!
