If you enjoy looking around on Pinterest like myself, then you must have stumbled upon those trendy silhouette vases at least once. I loved the concept and thought a lot on how I could make my own, since I live in a country where it would be difficult to find one. That’s how I got the idea to make it out of yarn. First, I wanted to crochet it, but the thought of how long it will take, got the best of me. That’s how the idea of using a knitting mill machine came to my mind. Work smarter and faster, that’s what I told to myself. So let’s get to the point and let me show you how to DIY a silhouette vase to embellish your home decor.
Material – DIY Silhouette Vase
- A knitting mill machine
- Yarn of your choice
- Craft wire (2 mm)
- White nylon satin ribbon
- Glue gun and a lighter
- Wood sticks for the pampas
- White acrylic yarn (fine)

DIY: How to make the silhouette vase
White the yarn you chose and the knitting mill machine, make 4 different pieces: 2 for the top and bottom circles, and 2 for the sides. The length of the sides should be 31 cm. For the top you should make enough for a 14 cm diameter circle, while for the bottom: enough for a 10,5 cm diameter circle.

Cut 4 pieces of wire a little longer than your yarn pieces. Slide the wires inside each pieces of yarn.
For the circles, sew each tips of the yarn to each other to close them.

Time to connect each pieces together. With the excess of wire you have for both sides, make sure to secure the top and bottom circles by making loops around their wires. Hide the wires under the yarn. If it still shows, you can take a piece of yarn and sew on top of it, respecting the stitches shape.

Build the sides’s shape of a vase by bending inward the wires at the top, while rounding the lower part, just as shown in the picture above.
Once you have finished assembling the vase together, and hiding every millimeter of the wires, you can proceed to make the pampas flowers.
DIY: How to make a Pampa flower – Silhouette Vase

Take your ribbon roll, and cut several pieces of a length of approximately 9 cm long. With the lighter, burn slightly one of the tip of the ribbon, to avoid it from unraveling completely. Now start to fray the other side; leaving a small part, near the burned tip, intact (see pictures below). This is where we will put glue to stick the ribbon to the wooden stick.

Take the wooden stick, and starting the top tip, glue each piece of frayed ribbon, in a spiral way to create the pampa flower.

Once you reach the length of flower you want: take your yarn and glue it the same way around the stick, from the end of the flower until the bottom of the stick.

Make 8 of them (or more if you want), and tie them up together with a piece of yarn. Make a bow with the ribbon and attach it around them in a way that will hide the yarn under.

Put your pampas inside the vase and voilà! You’re done!
This is an easy and quick project to make. This item gives such an elegant touch to your room. You can trim the pampas to make it look less long and fluffy. I personally prefer the “pineapple” look to it.
